The Himalayas and adjacent mountain ranges are an important source of water for more than 25% of the global population. However, it is unknown how much snow and rain falls in those vast mountain ranges, because of the lack of observations and the inaccessibility of the terrain. Understanding how much water is available in the source areas of Asia’s large river is of crucial importance.
FutureWater, Utrecht University and ICIMOD have, in collaboration with ScienceMedia, developed a mini-documentary about the project on “Using Unmanned Airborne Vehicles (UAV) for glacier monitoring in the Himalayas”. The documentary shows how innovative techniques can be used to understand the response of glaciers to climate change. The documentary also provides a broader context by showing the devastating effect the Nepal earthquake of 25 April 2015 has had on the people of the Langtang valley in Nepal.
